Teresa Nunes is a Portuguese Australian textile artist.
With a background in communication design and art education, she founded her own studio in 2018, creating ceramic and textile jewellery and experimental objects.
Over time, textiles became her preferred medium, and a way to forge a connection to her childhood and roots. Growing up in a full house, with three generations, traditional cloths and sewing were a big part of her life from an early age, and became a way to express herself.
Different techniques like botanical dyeing, embroidery, appliqué and patchwork, are often combined in pieces, exploring the tactile qualities of textiles, as well as their pictorial potential.
Moved by the rich history of textiles, their vital presence in our daily lives and their power as a medium to communicate and to tell stories, Teresa is passionate about embracing projects which explore these aspects, as well as bringing people together.
In her process, she focuses on environmentally responsible practices, questioning the circularity of objects and our relationship to them over time. From this perspective, repurposing materials, dyeing with plants and repairing are an essential part of her work.
Her pieces and practice are an invitation to question over production and consumption, and to think about alternative ways.
Besides the work developed for different clients and entities, Teresa often teaches workshops in Lisbon.
